Although we may not like to admit, Winter is approaching, with the clocks now having gone back. With this in mind we have provided some top winter gardening tips to help your lawns, shrubs decking and patios through the long cold months.

• Prune your shrubs back to a manageable size, removing any dead branches along the way.
• Keep your patios and decking clear of wet leaves, as these can be incredibly slippery when wet. Moss and algae can also build up on these areas, so try and use a pressure washer every few weeks to prevent buildup. There is a variety of anti slip paints than can be used for decking, which will help provide some grip during the Winter months.
• Start using compost to feed your plants. This will deliver excellent nutrients to the plants, and help them to thrive once Spring comes round.
• Mulch can also be used as a great “blanket” during winter for plant beds.
• Frost blankets can also help to keep your plants in shape during winter, so look to get some of these well in advance of the cold snaps.
• Ensure the lawn is well forked and aerated to prevent standing water. Standing water can encourage multiple weeds and moss, which is rather unwanted on a beautiful green lawn!
• Keep fallen leaves off the lawn by keeping it clean and raked every week or so. Under the leaves will live many creepy crawlies that may ruin all that hard work of yours. What we would encourage is take those pile of leaves and put them into a corner of the garden. The birds will love this, as they can forage and feast on the insects that lurk amongst it all.
