It almost seems ridiculous to already be talking of the upcoming winter months – especially as we’ve only just been hit with a heatwave around the country. But low and behold, August is now behind us and in little time whatsoever we’ll be entering the Autumn season.

Of course, for your garden, the chances are its use will start to fade – as the nights draw in and the cold returns for the best part of three or four months. However, what’s essential is ensuring your hard efforts in the garden don’t go to waste over the chilly winter season.

In fact, by spending a bit of time doing the basic chores around your garden, you’ll be able to spruce up your lawn, vegetable patch and decking – ensuring a healthier start to 2017. Plus, you might be able to drag out a few more weeks of use by keeping it in tip top condition.

• As Autumn hits, rake the leaves and shred with a lawnmower to create one or two inches of organic compost for your soil.
• It’s this time of the year that’s a great time to fertilise your lawn – so allow the grass to grow to a good height and reseed thin spots. You should also remember to keep the lawn well-watered during the Autumn, especially during cold, dry spells.
• Cut back your perennial plants and ensure the garden and soil is well weeded. Use compost to keep your plants well-fed during the colder months.
• Plant evergreens. These should be in place as the backbone to your garden, keeping your outside looking great during those hard winter months.
• Pull any leaves and debris from your pond, before casting a net across. This will stop the water from turning a foul colour – whilst preventing the filters from being blocked.
• Consider servicing your lawnmower before it’s tucked out of sight for the foreseeable future. You should also think about maintaining your other garden tools, such as sharpening shears and thoroughly cleaning equipment to prevent rust.
• Give your greenhouse a full clean both inside and out. Sweep out the debris, disinfect your paths and give the glass a good wipe down. Make sure to ventilate the greenhouse well to ensure everything dries through.
