Do you have a smaller garden? Want to maximise its potential, with more useable space to enjoy throughout the year? Then you’re in exactly the right place, as we talk you through great ways to really get the most of your outside living area.
Particularly, urban gardens don’t quite have the space you’d love – but that doesn’t mean you need to resign yourself to feeling cramped in. Here are some great ways to cut out the clutter and have a garden you’ll be proud of.
We talk about simplicity a lot, and of course, there are many homeowners who love to go for a bolder approach outside. However, don’t be afraid to choose ‘less is more’. Having an overcomplicated design in a small back garden will look both messy and crowdy, which is not what anyone aims for.
The chances are you know all about including mirrors in particularly dark or small rooms to create the illusion of more space. And this concept works just as well outside – in your garden. Of course, you need to think placement, as in what you’ll reflect (not the dustbin or brickwork), but you’ll be able to find a design that looks fantastic. Hiding the mirror edges with plants is a good way to better the effect too.
If you have a smaller garden, boundaries on show really won’t be helping your cause. They draw attention to the true size of the space. Plus, there are plenty of plants that’ll come in handy, such as ivy and climbing hydrangeas. Consider bamboo too, if you fancy something a little different.
Dividing up your garden, no matter the size, will really help improve its visual perception. Use plants, trellises and freestanding walls to do this, giving the impression of a larger space. For those looking for a different approach, consider concealing parts of your garden, so people don’t know its real size, whilst piquing interest of what’s around the corner.
It’s an obvious point, but large features in a small garden just don’t work – the same can be said for small features in a larger space. The last thing you need is the feeling of being cramped. How can you negate this though, whilst still having some inspiring garden features? A wall mounted water feature is a great start. Don’t go the opposite way either, by miniaturising everything. All this’ll service to do is make your garden smaller still. So avoid smaller pots, plants and paving.
At Millhouse Landscapes, we’re the experts in designing both small and large gardens alike. We take the time to understand your hopes and dreams, before drawing on our extensive experience to create an outside area you’ll fall in love with.
