How to prepare your garden for summer

If you’re anything like us, you’re cheering at the first signs of warmer weather rolling around. But don’t rejoice too soon – this is Britain after all and the chances are we’ll be submerged in cold and frosty conditions once again in the not so distant future.

However, with the promise of spring, it’s time to get outside and start working on your garden. For avid gardeners there’s not a better time of year than getting your hands dirty as you prepare for another 12 months in the outside world. But for those of you who are new to the scene, we’ve got some great tips to help you get started.

Fill in new soil

Your first job is going to be cleaning and sweeping away debris that’s collected over the last few months. Scrub the moss from your patio, sweep the leaves and give everything a good old tidy up. Once this job is out of the way, it’s time to get cracking on the soil.

The best time to change soil is when the ground’s still slightly damp – so right around now we’d say. Invest in your nutrient rich soil and sprinkle organic fertiliser if you’ve been doing your work over the winter.

Remove the crowds

You may not have been at the races for the last few years – leaving your garden to overrun and plants to outgrow their space. If that’s a familiar story, now’s the perfect time to be moving plants around and finding them a new home – in your lovely fresh soil of course.

Start the summer planning

Putting the ground work in now will make the summer a breeze. You’ll have your garden ready and raring to go, so by the time the sun’s in full force you’ll simply be able to relax and enjoy the space.

Consider what changes you want to make and think about how you’ll go about this. Where can your new plants be sited so they receive optimal levels of sunshine? Will you be investing in decking or a patio area? Now’s the time to consider your design options and have everything lined up.

Choose a colour scheme

In a similar theme to above, you should also be thinking about colours, and the scheme you’ll implement into your garden. What colours do you like (or dislike)? Some gardeners choose to have highly contrasting colours to produce a sharp and standout display, whilst others love to opt for colour cohesion. Whatever your taste, pick those vibrant shades and colours now.
